Sound News!: Ampeg cabinets with crossovers
Posted on Monday, October 15 @ 09:35:12 EDT by Dana

Ampeg Guitar and Bass amps...

For those of you who have any questions about the new horn protectors in all Ampeg cabinets with crossovers. Here is recent note written to me from the designer of the crossover.

I did some more testing to give you an idea of what this new crossover can handle. With a pure sine wave input the unit will withstand 80vrms. This is the equivalent of 1600 watts into a 4 ohm cabinet. Also with a broadband (20-20kHz) pink noise signal it withstood 100vrms (clipped coming out of an SVT4PRO mono-bridged). This is 2500 watts at 4 ohms. The bulbs popped at about 110vrms.

Using a single side of the SVT4PRO I was unable to damage the bulbs with a heavily clipped noise signal of 72vrms.

Additionally I "played" an instrument thru one side of the SVT4PRO (limiter defeated). The treble was boosted on instrument and amp. Extreme banging and string pulling did not hurt the bulbs. Even holding the bass next to the crossover and allowing feedback clipping the power amp had no effect on the bulbs.

The bulbs finally popped with the same "playing" technique thru the amp mono-bridged! This treatment would easily turn the 10" drivers inside-out.

Since the cabinets are rated at 400-600 watts rms I think we're covered for anything other than deliberate misuse of the unit.

I think that says it all.
